Please give us a short summary of your website?
This is my first site for Hawaiian HD Video. I kept it basic and use DIVX to show my demo videos and photography.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I have been planning to do graphic arts services, photography, video production and web design professionally in Hawaii. When I felt I had done enough jobs here I posted my site.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
Way back in '95 I did a "funny photos" site before they were everywhere. I'd always just played with design as a hobby.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I usually name sites after businesses or the events they promote. I've also had ones up like "PeopleBeingFunny.com" when I had time to play with it.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
The site is the opposite of what I see too much of out there- People blindly following the commands of "Thou shalt not use dark backgrounds". When I design for clients I follow the rules unless we have a good reason not to. I let the sites I've done for clients speak for my work. I'm updating www.HawaiianHDVideo.com next week as more of a flash site to show people what they can try.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
Use the site to promote my creative work on The Island. I've helped several businesses and am very happy to find myself busy. I also hope to promote my ongoing video productions on the site.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
I've always enjoyed this type of work, but I understand that it's work and people are paying me. I probably err on the side of putting in more time than the other guys, but it will pay off for me in the long run. For my site I did it quickly and have seen the videos do all the selling for me.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I'd have a team of crack Flash Designers put together all we can do for the people I work for, there is always lots to learn, but as I speak to clients I always find new ways to meet their demands and keep people happy.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I set it up to handle a lot of traffic, you have to with video sites.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
The cost of doing business in Hawaii, I have found ways to keep my business low overhead so that I can offer the best rates for what I do and keep everyone happy.
What has been your biggest challenge?
At first it was getting people to trust that I could do it. Their is a period where you think, should I just do cookie cutter sites to pay the bills? My hard work is paying off and I expectto get future clients based on examples of our cutting edge, modern Web Designs. Also, I've been fortunate to work on exciting video projects, such as a series of MMA events and a Documentary on 2012 which is scheduled to play at Cannes in 4 years.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
I've kept it low key, but I know how to promote sites, to get them well placed. Services like Directory.Classifieds1000 are hugely important for legitimately promoting your site. I am so happy that the cheaters who use copy paste X 1,000,000,000 are getting busted by Google. We are winning back the internet by legitimately explaining what the sites are, like a book store, which is how the internet should be! There are other fee based services which work when all else fails.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
No, I'm up for the challenge of running hundreds of sites and look forward to the day I am!
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
About a Year. I hope to be at it for a long, long time!
