Please give us a short summary of your website?
My site is a photography site specializing in wildlife, flowers, seascapes and more. All are shots that I have personally taken over the last couple years. More are going to be added as I order prints of them to verify the quality of the pictures once printed.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I have always had a passion for photography (since my first camera when I was 8 yrs old). I am intending on breaking away from the 9-5 lifestyle I have come to dread and made the descision to go professional with my photography. Working with computers has shown me the best way to get your images to the widest variety of people is throught the www and I descided to make my website to take advantage of this ever popular media.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
My first website was actually for a video game group I used to be involved in. It was for the computer game Halo 1. We used it to record status and plan future events. It was fun while it lasted.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Simple... I used my name.
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
I am personally developing it as well as being the photographer. This allows me to work on it as recommendations are made. I am offering a wide variety of canvases and will be offering puzzles, postcards and more soon. I have also made the offer that if others are looking for a certain subject, I will try to get the picture for them. There will also be a forum coming soon, where people can discuss the prints and make any suggestions.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
As of now I am looking to sell the canvases and other media. This will allow me to travel and take pictures in more remote locations. As I am only 22, I am rather limited in my funding and therefore have been sticking to photo sites near my home. Eventually I want to make this my professional career.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
Well, this is a hard one, sice I just launched the site. Fortunately the overhead is rather low at the moment, and the time I am more then willing to give for this. I will have to post on this a bit later, with a more in depth look at success.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
If I had an unlimited budget, the first thing I would do is travel and take pictures in various places across the globe. Some future locations I am considering are Alaska, Madagascar, and Costa Rica, as well as many other locations.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Definately, I have a professional developing company that can turn around orders very quickly and efficiently.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Really the hardest things I have had to cope with were trying to find a developing company I was happy with and, one I am still enduring, trying to find a company to print puzzles. The last one I am still looking for at the moment.
What has been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge with nature photography has to be taking quality shots. Some days I take 400+ pictures and keep 20 if I'm lucky. Definately love the challenge however.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
So far, posting it on various photography directories.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
It really hasn't. I expected to have some trouble setting it up the first time, and the shopping cart was the hardest obsticle to overcome. I have since managed to get everything working smoothly and the upkeep is easy.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
I will likely keep it going indefinately.
How can you ensure the quality of the prints to your potential customers?
I personally have prints made of every picture before I post them on the website. I also have multiple people look at them and collect feedback on them.
